What for?

Came across this tree the other day while I was taking a walk in the park. It struck me as odd. You had to figure that a whole lot of work went into trimming off all the limbs and branch's. So why was the truck left? Don't know if this is just funny looking or pathetic. Either way, it still begs the question......What for?
